On September 12, 2023, Apple announced that macOS Sonoma, the latest version of its Mac operating system, will be available to all users with compatible Mac models starting on Tuesday, September 26.
macOS Sonoma includes a number of new features, including:
- Interactive desktop widgets: Widgets can now be placed right on your desktop, blending into your desktop wallpaper to not be obtrusive when you're working. You can customize the size and placement of widgets, and choose from a variety of different types, such as weather, calendar, news, and stocks.
- Apple TV-like aerial screensavers: macOS Sonoma includes a new set of aerial screensavers that feature slow-motion videos of places around the world, such as the skyline of Dubai at night, the backcountry of Yosemite National Park, and Sonoma. You can choose to shuffle by Landscape, Earth, Underwater, or Cityscape themes.
- Enhancements to Messages and Safari: Messages now includes features like iMessage reactions, undo send, and scheduled messages. Safari now includes features like browser profiles, which can retain different sets of bookmarks and different focuses, and a new tab selection feature that allows you to select multiple tabs at once.
- New Game mode: macOS Sonoma includes a new Game mode that prioritizes CPU and GPU performance for gaming. This can help to improve frame rates and reduce latency during gameplay.
- Other new features: macOS Sonoma also includes a number of other new features, such as a condensed login experience, screen sharing improvements, and link tracking protection in Private Browsing.
To install macOS Sonoma, you must have a 2018 MacBook or Mac Mini, a 2019 iMac, a 2017 iMac Pro, a 2019 Mac Pro, or a 2022 Mac Studio.
