Coast Guard Completes Recovery of Titan Submersible Debris and Presumed Human Remains
October 12, 2023
The United States Coast Guard announced today that it has completed the recovery of all known debris and presumed human remains from the Titan submersible, which imploded on its way to explore the wreck of the Titanic in June, killing all five people on board.
The recovery operation, which was conducted in coordination with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, was a complex and challenging undertaking, given the extreme depth of the Titan's wreckage field.
"I am grateful to the Coast Guard crews and our partners who worked tirelessly to recover the debris and remains from the Titan," said Captain Jason Neubauer, Chair of the Coast Guard's Marine Board of Investigation into the incident. "This evidence will be critical in our investigation to determine the cause of this tragedy and prevent similar accidents from happening in the future."
The recovered debris and remains are being transported to a secure location for further analysis and testing. The Coast Guard expects to release more information about the investigation in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, the Coast Guard is offering its condolences to the families and friends of the five victims.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident," said Captain Neubauer. "We are committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation to determine the cause of this tragedy and to prevent similar accidents from happening in the future."
