NASA and Japan to launch world's 1st wooden satellite as soon as 2024.
The LignoSat satellite, aptly named after the Latin word for wood, will be a compact, cube-shaped structure measuring approximately 10 centimeters in diameter and weighing around 330 grams. It will be primarily constructed from treated Japanese magnolia wood, a lightweight and durable material selected for its resilience to the extreme conditions of outer space.
The satellite will carry a suite of sensors and instruments designed to test the performance of wood in space and gather valuable data on its potential applications in future spacecraft. Researchers are particularly interested in assessing the wood's ability to withstand the harsh radiation environment, extreme temperature fluctuations, and the vacuum of space.
The launch of LignoSat represents a significant step forward in addressing the growing problem of space debris. Currently, over 9,300 tons (8,440 metric tons) of space objects, including inoperative satellites and fragments of spent rocket stages, orbit Earth, posing a threat to active spacecraft and potentially causing harm upon re-entry.
