HD 100546: A Young Star with a Forming Planet

HD 100546, also known as KR Muscae, is a young star system located about 353 light-years away in the southern constellation Musca. Unlike our Sun, which is a mature star, HD 100546 is still in its pre-main sequence stage, meaning it's still in the process of formation. This makes the system particularly interesting to astronomers, as it offers a glimpse into the early stages of planetary development.


A Star with Disks


One of the key features of HD 100546 is its surrounding circumstellar disk. This swirling cloud of gas and dust is the birthplace of potential planets. The disk is vast, stretching from a distance of 0.2 to 4 astronomical units (AU) from the star and then again from 13 AU out to a few hundred AU. An AU is the average distance between Earth and the Sun.

Within this disk lies a point of particular interest: a potential protoplanet called HD 100546 b. Detected in 2013, this celestial body is believed to be in the early stages of formation. Due to the challenges of directly observing such a young object, estimates of its mass range widely, from 1 to 25 times the mass of Jupiter.
