A SpaceX Starlink satellite, designated Starlink 5693, re-entered Earth's atmosphere on January 28, 2025, creating a spectacular fireball over parts of the United States.




The event was widely observed across Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois, with numerous eyewitnesses capturing videos and photos of the fiery spectacle. The American Meteor Society received over 62 reports of the fireball, highlighting the widespread visibility of the event.

Astronomer Jonathan McDowell confirmed that the debris was indeed from Starlink 5693, which had been gradually losing altitude since December 6th. Starlink satellites are designed to deorbit and burn up in the atmosphere after approximately five years of service. This controlled re-entry process ensures that the satellites do not become space debris.

The fiery demise of Starlink 5693 is a common occurrence for SpaceX's Starlink constellation, which currently consists of thousands of operational satellites. SpaceX intentionally deorbits and incinerates several Starlink satellites daily, creating a visually stunning but routine event.
