Battle Scars on the Red Planet: Curiosity Mars Rover Inspects Severely Cracked Wheel

Exploring another planet is a brutal business, and nothing proves that quite like the wheels of NASA’s Curiosity rover. A newly released image captured by the rover’s Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera on July 23, 2026 (Sol 4963 of its epic mission) gives us a stark, close-up look at the toll 14 years of Martian driving has taken.

The Cost of 20 Miles on Mars

Curiosity touched down inside Mars' Gale Crater on August 5, 2012, lowered gently to the surface by a pioneering "sky crane" system. Since then, the one-ton robotic explorer has logged over 20 miles (32 kilometers) across the rocky, rugged, and unforgiving Martian soil in its search for signs of ancient habitability.

That distance might sound modest by Earth standards, but the Martian terrain is littered with sharp, ventifacted rocks—stones sculpted by wind into literal knives of stone.

The Evolution of the Damage

When Curiosity left Earth, its six solid aluminum wheels were pristine, save for 12 small holes per wheel intentionally drilled at the factory to act as visual markers for tracking distance. Every other gouge, tear, and gaping hole you see today was earned the hard way.

  • The Treads (Grousers): The chevron-shaped raised treads are designed to provide grip. Once these completely break through, the structural integrity of the wheel shifts significantly.

  • The Skin: The aluminum skin between the treads is incredibly thin—only about 0.75 millimeters thick (thicker than a soda can, but not by much) to save precious weight during launch.

Should We Be Worried?

Fortunately, NASA and the engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have been managing this problem for over a decade. They routinely perform visual inspections using the MAHLI camera to monitor the progression of the cracks.

To prolong the rover's life, the driving team uses sophisticated routing algorithms to steer clear of the sharpest labyrinth zones and has even implemented an "algorithm update" that adjusts the speed of individual wheels to minimize the stress caused by slipping over jagged rocks.

Despite looking like a shredded tire, NASA engineers confirmed that the wheels are still holding up remarkably well and have plenty of life left to support the rover as it continues to climb Mount Sharp. Curiosity might be bruised, but its journey to unlock the secrets of Mars is far from over.
